She was good on a run, and held her own on a tack, but I had to make some changes to her design by having an easier cleating method and raising the sail higher as not to interfere with the paddles of the kayak. But in all i was very pleased with the 1st results. It was hard to control while videoing!

This river consists of rapids ranging from class 2's up to class 4's out of class 6 on the rating chart. The water was fast and higher than normal this year. 3 of us fell out of our kayaks going through the rapids but everyone survived with no serious injuries. Great fun!!!

Some people are not aware of the bargains available at walmart that can be had by purchasing items at walmart online and having the items delivered to your house for very low prices or available for pick up at your local walmart at a future date. I saw a walmart kayak on sale at an enormous price advantage and many other items online that never show up at my local store. I did not want to make the video too long and left out some information. When I purchased my rod and reel online at walmart the transaction was canceled and my paypal was refunded twice over a period of two days,, and I was never able to understand why. I was able to purchase the rod and reel on the third day of trying. I also went to a store in which the online information said the rod and reel was available and the clerk in the sporting good section had no clue as to what I was talking about and could not check online for me. I also asked him some fishing tackle questions and about availability of surf casting rods in his store and he was not interested and merely pointed me to the section of rods. I am surprised at the low cost of shipping to homes by walmart and the large selection of items not seen In my local walmart, but they need to work on their order taking and inventory and need to hire clerks for departments that have a clue about their items they are selling.

The kayak is an inflatable Sevylor Tahiti that I bought for at a swap meet a year and a half ago. I also made paddles and a keel out of PVC. I'll have to put that on another video some time. With the gas prices being at an all time high I have been hesitant to take my SUV out with the kayak. I began to look for other alternatives to transport my kayak from my Jetta. For the first time EVER, I try feeder kings out of Homer. I had gotten intel from various sources that tell me the Kings are close to the spit. Sources say troll from Land's End Hotel out to the Green Buoy. So is it winter yet? I guess not. I think even here in Alaska they consider October as late autumn. When is winter? Officially its Dec 21. But this is Alaska. I think November is considered winter here. So I can't claim to have caught a winter king yet. But this year I have caught a Spring King (May), Summer king (July), now a fall King in October! Only one more season to go! But with the recent weather, I dress for winter fearing the worst. Check the forecast and its only calling for one footers. Really? This time of year? I had been SUPER excited about trying Kings in the winter time. My imagination probably got the better part of me and I was thinking it might be my version of the Deadliest Catch but with a kayak and Kings instead of crab. So I arrive in Homer and I stare across the water in disbelief. Maybe I missed the ocean somehow because this looks a LOT more like a lake. I have to say it was probably the first time EVER that I was just a little disappointed that the conditions were so good. I had psyched myself up for a rodeo in 3 to 5 foot swells with snow falling around me. Instead I got perfectly flat, calm, and sunny. I definitely had too many layers of clothes on! Oh well, they say you should dress for immersion in the water and not the air temperature ...

SMART Pelican Release 2012

Last month, SMART rescued a Pelican from the Sepulveda Wldlife Area that had fishing line entangled with a water bottle on its wing and leg keeping it from flying. Hammer, Nett, Glen, Smitty and Nav made two attempts. One by Carlson Board then one by inflatable Kayak and a large net. Success!!!! The Pelican was picked up from the East Valley Animal Shelter by The California Wildlife Center then taken to the International Bird Rescue Center. After a month of rehabilitation, the Pelican was released last Saturday. SMART would like to thank The California Wildlife Center, The International Bird Rescue Center and Wildlife Photographer Jim Hanlon for all of their help.

Penarth Lifeboat was launched today (December 29 2011) to rescue two kayakers in distress off Lavernock Point in the Bristol Channel. Another kayak with two others on board refused help from the lifeboat and stayed out at sea despite heavy rain and high winds. An inflatable ZapCat rib rendered assistance until the lifeboat arrived on the scene. The two casualties were brought ashore in thermal blankets and received medical checks for hypothermia at the lifeboat house. Their grey-coloured kayak was salvaged and lifted aboard the lifeboat to be brought ashore. Docking in reverse is never easy - especially when the ebb tide is running (left to right) across the narrow gate of the lifeboat trailer. At the second attempt - with both engines in full reverse - the lifeboat is settled on her trailer and hauled out.
